Blog check up grade

On Monday, February 14th your blogs will receive their first grade. Anything posted after 9:30 am on that day will not be graded. You will receive 3 blog check up grades through the course of the semester (about one per month to six weeks). These will be averaged together with grade from your Morgue (hard copy archive commonly called sketchbook) to be your Visual Journal grade. The Visual Journal is 25% of each of your studio grades. You may want to review the download/handout on the Visual Journal (please do).

Get your blogs up to date.

If you have absences or tardies, re-skim the syllabus to review how these things impact your grade.

Modular Madness research

Modular madness materials to collect and research to do before Wednesday.

Bring 100 objects (found or cheap…no craft crap…ie beads)
Bigger objects = 100 (ie cups…5” or larger) of 'em
Smaller objects = 1000 (fingernail clippings, hair, tea bags, toothpicks, seeds, etc)
The smaller the object the more you have to bring.
Research objects
  1. History of object and material
  2. Purpose of object
  3. Dictionary/Thesaurus rabbit trail of object and purpose
  4. Symbolic/Metaphor/Lore/Urban legion
  5. Object or word usage -- Poems, Literature, Song lyrics, Brand names, etc
Research multiple binding agents…bring different options…glue, joint, wire/thread, ???

Morgue blog
Post picture of selected material to blog
Post research data to blog
Bring research notes in morgue

It takes guts...

..to stand up in front of three adults and in front of ~40 of your peers and let them crit your work! Yes many projects have room to improve but that takes guts to stand there and listen to what is said about what is working and not working about the piece! Good job!

Lecture 3 (2/4) Project

"Always trust yourself and your own feeling, as opposed to argumentations, discussion, or introductions of that sort; if it turns out that you are wrong, then the natural growth of your inner life will eventually guide you to other insights. Allow your judgments their own silent, undisturbed development, which, like all progress, must come from deep within and cannot be forced or hastened. Everything is gestation and then birthing. To let each impression and each embryo of a feeling come to completion, entirely in itself, in the dark, in the unsayable, the unconscious, beyond the reach of one’s own understanding, and with deep humility and patience to wait for the hour when a new clarity is born: this alone is what it means to live as an artist: in understanding as in creating."  – Rainer Maria Rilke

The dates will be significantly altered because the corresponding lecture on internal inspiration/creativity will be on 2/18. But I thought you might want to read it and let it settle in you for a bit before we start on it. It is not a standard lecture assignment but instead an art project. Read it, think about it, feel free to ask me questions.

Lecture 3 Project--Harvesting from Life

Lecture 4 Assignment will be based on our February 11 field trip to the Menil. Download assignment sheet next week and bring it along with your Morgue. Plan to be there from 11 to at least 2. Bring a sack lunch and drink. Arrange a carpool group and exchange cell phone numbers so that no one gets left behind.

My class (MW) will meet at the Cy Twombly Gallery (1501 Branard Street Houston, TX 77006) across the street from the Menil promptly at 11 am. Bill's class (TTH) will meet at front doors of the Menil.

Other Friday field trip is March 11th and we will travel to the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
